POSTCARDS FROM THE BOTTOM
People from South New Mexico have a lot of pride for their resilient home place. I created postcards that are embossed with words that describe SNM: “forgotten,” “resilient,” “pride,” “home,” “endures.” The embossed letters are slightly raised form the page, enough to create some shadow and highlight to notice they exist but can easily be overlooked -- like South New Mexico. I created letters using a laser cutter, which were then used to emboss the words on the blank white page. I stamped the letters “SNM” on each one. I used stamps to create a more natural and unpolished effect to match the characterization of the environment. The letters are stamped in black ink, which is the first thing you see on the page that first appears blank and empty until you look more closely. The “empty” look on the page was meant to mirror the desert open lands in South New Mexico that appear to have nothing. However, upon closer look and discovery, it’s home that people take pride in.
